In an attempt to raise the nation's historically low rate of breast-feeding, federal health officials commissioned an attention-grabbing advertising campaign a few years ago to convince mothers that their babies faced real health risks if they did not breast-feed. It featured striking photos of insulin syringes and asthma inhalers topped with rubber nipples.
Plans to run these blunt ads infuriated the politically powerful infant formula industry, which hired a former chairman of the Republican National Committee and a former top regulatory official to lobby the Health and Human Services Department. I don't think it's a fair fight against infant formulas. People who were given enough awareness don't need those threatening adds to force them to breastfeed.
ReplyDeleteI think it's a shame that the original ads were pushed aside due to the powerful formula and pharmaceutical lobby. Studies have indicated that risk-based messages like those contained in the original ads are more effective than watered down versions.
ReplyDeleteParents and the general public ought to be made aware of the risks of infant formula (and there are numerous risks for both mother and child), and the original ads were more effective in relaying those risks to the general public.
It's sad when money for the formula industry takes priority over the health and well-being of mothers and children.
It's a sad reality that people would do anything for money even if the health and wellness of babies are at risk.
ReplyDeleteAwe, the poor formula company was scared..... What about all the little babies suffering from not being breastfed?! The formula companies need to stop advertising that their product is any where close to breastmilk. Human Milk for Human Babies, stop giving infants formula!!! Give only the best- which is with out a doubt BREASTMILK, uh there is so much out there about the dangers of formula, parents need to be more informed.
