But this poor woman went through *11* cycles of IVF--ouch. Glad she has a baby. Her husband has 6 kids from previous wives, they didn't consider adoption, either. Lots of interesting moral, legal, environmental, ethical, cultural, gender issues raised by this.
Curious to hear your responses.

Yes, the pictures were interesting.
ReplyDeleteShe came across as elitist in many ways, but I have to respect everything she has done and I am very happy for her!
The comments were disturbing to say the least. I am horribly upset that this country feels this way! The ignorance and hatefulness is depressing.
Thanks for your comment Rayven--I'm curious, they only let egg donors donate 3 times (cancer fears from hyperstimulation I think)...is there any regulation on how many times you can be a surrogate? Do you have any health aftereffects? Interesting how the surrogate in the article is obviously very fertile and then ZIP! got pg. from the 1st implantation.
ReplyDeleteYes, you're right, some of the comments were quite cruel too, and many of those were in response to those photos. It was interesting to see the actual gestational carrier comment--she explained how the photographer manipulated the readers with the images she posed and chose to use. The carrier talked about how there were dozens and dozens and dozens of pics taken, some of them with her in front of the creek that runs by her home, and showing beautiful scenery on the property, but the photographer along the way posed her on her beat up porch (her friend weighed in too, saying the porch is so beat up because of the busyness at the house--people coming and going and lots and lots of activity). She also describes how the photographer urged her there to take her shoes off, as well, creating an image that made the carrier look like a poor hillbilly, when she is nothing of the sort. Look too, at the pose of the baby nurse. Ridiculously transparent attempt to make the story about class and cause controversy around that, instead of letting it be a story about a woman helping another woman.

Ahh... touchy subject. I personally want to have a biological child. I would be open to adoption after having a biological child first.
