You might have heard about the boneheaded idea that we have to "pastuerize" almonds by coating them with a chemical that has been banned in the E.U. because it's a carcinogen. And when has an organic raw food ever hurt anyone? This battle (a losing one, as we ARE made up of bacteria) against microbes is exactly what's leading to those superbugs that are killing everyone in the hospital!
From the Organic Consumers Association:
-----------------------------------------
Despite a negative backlash from almond producers, retailers and consumers, the USDA has implemented its ruling to require that all raw almonds sold in stores must be pasteurized. The rule went into effect on September 1st, and since then, all retail outlets have been forced to remove true raw almonds from store shelves. Consumers will be misled by this action as there will still be almonds on store shelves labeled as 'raw', but they will actually be pasteurized. One of the FDA-recommended pasteurization methods requires the use of propylene oxide, which is classified as a 'possible human carcinogen' by the International Agency for Research on Cancer and is banned in Canada, Mexico, and the European Union. Since the decision about the rule was made, Secretary of Agriculture, Mike Johanns, has stepped down. He is temporarily replaced by Chuck Conner. This may provide a new opportunity for reversal. Please contact Conner today to ask that the rule be suspended for 6 months while the public comment period is re-opened."

This is the freakiest thing I've ever heard of - almonds? I cannot go to even my health food store and buy organic raw almonds that have not been pasteurized???
ReplyDeleteHowever, I have to ask Marie and others out there, what your feelings are about raw milk. My accu-dr swore by grass-fed raw milk from a well supervised farm in Connecticut and I drank it for some time but stopped mid pregnancy due to paranoia.

Hi Ali,
ReplyDeleteIf I did drink milk, it would be raw milk and probably goat milk (had smaller protein molecules). Homogenizing/pasteurizing, etc., does funny things to it, denatures protein. Think of it this way: raw milk gets sour, pasteurized milk gets putrid--that's how it gets in your body as well, according to the Weston Price Foundation--check them out on Google.
Being Asian, however, I feel I'm just not genetically equipped to handle milk right now...
And when has an organic raw food ever hurt anyone?
ReplyDeleteNever heard of fugu?
Raw almonds contain cyanide, Too many can kill you. I don't know if pasteurization changes that...
ReplyDeleteI don't consider poisonous fish to be food.
ReplyDeleteAnd when has an organic raw food ever hurt anyone?
ReplyDeleteI've read before that Lincoln's mother died after consuming organic milk from a cow that had recently fed upon white snakeroot, a wildflower in the aster family.
Organic raw food is not automatically benign.
- oddjob (who recognizes his comment does not address the matter of pasteurized almonds)
