Perfect go-to stocking stuffers for a radiant holiday....

What to do about filling this?

I have a few suggestions. I LOVE Mineral Fusions' new lipsticks, lead free and comes in wonderful colors like "Delicious." And ALSO does not dry your lips out BUT the color stays. Really!

And who remembers Indian Earth? The all-mineral "makeup" that works with any skin tone? It's back !!  And you can get it in a teeny tiny terra cotta pot with a tiny pouf. Nostalgia and natural makeup--what's not to like?

Last but not least, my holiday season TRAVEL HACK: Nutriblade's wheatgrass shot means I can get a few in my bag and through the airport (especially with Pre-chek) because they are less than 3 oz, gluten free, organic, and full of nutrients--even better than Emergen-C in my opinion. Have not had a cold even in this hectic travel season and this is why...

And if you *do* start getting a cold, this Primal Essence Ginger zing was surprisingly good as a tea--and squirted into a chicken soup:

What are your favorite stocking stuffers for a year of wealth and health???

Common emulsifiers can cause cancer in mice

It's interesting--I get headaches from stuff like gellan gum and carrageenan, and apparently emulsifiers in common processed foods cause cancer in mice, via altering the microbiome. It's also associated with ulcerative colitis and other inflammation--

The microbiota is also a key factor in driving Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, the two most common forms of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). IBD is known to promote colon tumorigenesis and gave rise to the term "colitis-associated cancer." Low-grade inflammation, a condition more prevalent than IBD, was shown to be associated with altered gut microbiota composition and metabolic disease and is observed in many cases of colorectal cancer. These recent findings suggest dietary emulsifiers might be partially responsible for this association.

Mold in your coffee can make you sick?

That first cup of coffee is pure bliss for those people needing their morning caffeine fix, whether it is prepared with milk, sugar or simply black. But how about a splash of mycotoxins? A new study confirms the presence of these toxic metabolites produced by fungi in commercial coffee samples, leading to concerns about potential public health risks.

Coffee
Coffee with a splash of mycotoxins? The new study reveals levels that exceed those legally allowed in Spanish samples of coffee.
The study - led by Dr. Emilia Ferrer of the University of Valencia in Spain - is published in the journal Food Control.
She and her colleagues explain that mycotoxins are compounds produced by filamentous fungi - such as Aspergillus or Fusarium - that cause disease and health issues. These compounds can be carcinogenic and may affect the hormonal and immune systems.
Mycotoxicoses is the toxic effect of mycotoxins on animal and human health. Exposure to these compounds is typically by ingestion, but it can also occur through the skin or by inhalation.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), general interest in mycotoxins came about in 1960, when turkey X disease - a form of mycotoxicosis that was related to animal feed - arose in farm animals in England.

With Mammography overdiagnosis is real

Years ago I wrote for the New York Times, "Why I Never Got a Mammogram," where I looked at mortality data for women who got mammograms versus those who didn't (spoiler alert--they are exceedingly similar).

Now the New England Journal says the overdiagnosis of breast cancer via mammography is larger than generally recognized. Definitely something to consider.

"I think the main message [of the study] is that screening has both benefits and harms. There is no single 'right answer' ― values matter. Screening is a choice, not a public health imperative," Dr Welch told Medscape Medical News.
Overdiagnosis is considered one of the harms of screening, but it is not easily evaluated using clinical trial data because of the need for long-term patient follow-up, the study authors say.

It's allergy season--but watch out for OTC drugs !

This article talks about how common allergy and cold medications interfere with choline, and important brain chemical. Benedryl, actually, is a highly anti-cholinergenic drug.

From OregonLive:

Over-the-counter night-time cold medicines can make life bearable when you're battling a virus. And for allergy sufferers, drugs such as Claritin can significantly improve quality of life.
But researchers at Indiana University School of Medicine now suggest you think long and hard before taking many common cold and allergy medications, especially if you're past middle age.
The scientists, whose work has been published in the journal JAMA Neurology, say drugs that have a strong "anticholinergic effect" shrink the brain and decrease brain metabolism. This is not a new finding: earlier research has found a link between anticholinergic drugs and cognitive impairment among older adults. A 2013 study concluded that taking one of these drugs for only two months causes memory problems in older people.
