Starbucks Cups are NOT Recyclable

Besides the sugar, high-fructose corn syrup, pasteurized milk, Splenda, etc., Starbucks is ruining the environment!

Monday, September 17
By David Conrad THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH:

Starbucks goes through roughly 2.3 billion paper cups a year and touts its national award for using cups made of 10 percent recycled material. The sleeves on the cups even plead, 'Help us help the planet.' But don't be confused. Starbucks promotes recycling on its cups, but the cups themselves aren't recyclable here or in most other cities nationwide. 'Well, they tricked me,' said Nicole Mejias, 22, a self-described Starbucks freak. 'I immediately associate recycling with Starbucks because of their cups. That's so hypocritical. I would have never guessed' that the cups weren't easily recyclable. The reason: The plastic coating that keeps the cup from leaking also prevents it from being recycled with other paper products. That could be overcome, but it would cost more."*

If you must, at least bring in your own cup!

The use of cups with 10 percent recycled materials is a start for Starbucks. I think it's better than not using it at all.

They can do better than that. If they really support the environment, then they could find other ways to minimize the use of these cups.

Passing the cost onto the consumer seems like a great idea. As the world goes green, who would argue with Starbucks when they charge 5 cents more per cup? It would probably boost sales on top of being the right thing to do. I have found a lot of immediately available eco-friendly alternatives to the non-sustainable cups they now offer. I post about such disposable technology and more at www.greenstarbucks.com.

Instead of being angry at starbucks about this, though I am , and it is very easy to be. If they aren't providing recycable cups then seeing as they won't take on that responsibility, we as the consumers should. What would happen if until they sell fully recycable cups and place recycling bins in every store location, people refused to buy from them? Now this probably wouldn't be successful because not enough people care, and starbucks has become more of a fashion statement than anything, but the point is everyone complains about companies and the negatives but never demands anything different of them. Consumers do have power over coorperations.

Why not just bring your own cup to your coffeeshop? It's reusable and you're not hurting the environment, except for the water used to wash your cup.

It's not the corporation's fault if the endusers aren't doing their part as well.

I work at one of the busiest Starbucks in the country. It is true that the cups and sleeves are made from 10% recyleable fibers but for what? We throw away so many cups plastic and paper, lids, anything that falls on the floor and refill drinks. Mine doesn't even recycle the recites or the milk cartons. I need a greener job
