Don't take these herbs with these drugs

Herbs can actually interfere with some prescription drugs, so watch out for

ST. John's Wort - Don't take with antidepressants--can cause serotonin syndrome

Turmeric - Don't take with blood thinners like Coumadin (wafarin)

Licorice - Don't take with diuretics for high blood pressure.

Feverfew - Don't take if you have allergies to ragweek, don't take with blood thinners

I'm not sure I understand if you mean "don't take licorice if you have high blood pressure and happen to take diuretics", or "don't take licorice if you take diuretics, because it can cause high blood pressure"?

(I do know that licorice can cause hypertension, which I have an issue with. I don't have high blood pressure, however - in fact, it's low).

Thanks for the comment; it's a typo "don't take licorice if you have high blood pressure and take diuretics." Thanks for catching that.

I thought hypertension = high blood pressure?
What is your source for these herb effects?

Hi Susan,

Licorice can cause water retention, which I guess can cause high blood pressure, ergo if you're taking diuretics for high blood pressure, don't take licorice. I got this from Susun Weed's newsletter, I think!
