Too much iced tea?

Oxalates are contained in many foods including spinach. Too many oxalates may cause kidney stones, or before that, very very painful urination as those calcium oxalate crystals come "down the tube." As the weather heats up, something to keep in mind. From Newswise, the journalists'-only site:
---------------------------------

Newswise — Do you quench your summer thirst by drinking lots of ice tea? The dehydration that summer frequently brings combined with swilling too much ice tea increases your risk of kidney stones, says James Cummings, M.D., professor of urology at Saint Louis University. Ice tea contains the chemical oxalate, which is the key culprit in the formation of kidney stones, a painful and common disorder of the urinary tract. Cummings is available to talk about ways to prevent kidney stones.

Excellent recommendations. I would emphasize though the importance of proper hydration. A technique I was taught about a year ago is to drink six glasses of water (it's difficult when you are starting!) first thing in the morning. Then wait about 45 minutes or an hour (while you are getting ready) to eat or drink anything else. Then continue drinking clean pure water the rest of the day as normal. This technique stimulates all the internal organs and brings them rapidly to prime condition. You will feel the difference in a few days. Also another tip is to take ice cold showers. It will feel you with super energy and also make you sleep better at night.

Hi, actually studies have shown that although tea is high in oxalates, it seems to have other components that actually *reduce* the risk of kidney stones. E.g.:

"Some foods that have traditionally been assumed to increase stone formation because of their oxalate content (like black tea) actually appear in more recent research to have a preventive effect."

Green tea is particularly good for you, and 5 cups or more per day reduces risk factors for many types of cancer, heart disease, etc. I wouldn't want people to stop drinking tea because of this misinformed article — especially since you will get far more oxalates from a single serving of spinach than you would from drinking a gallon of iced tea!
