This just in from New York Times:
China plans to tighten rules on foreign adoptions, barring people who are single, obese, older than 50 or who fail to meet certain benchmarks in financial, physical or psychological health from adopting Chinese children, according to adoption agencies in the United States.Soon it will be NO wearers of corrective lenses, NO lovers of the musical "Cats," NO vegans, NO...what? I'm sure writers will make it onto the list sooner rather than later.
My other question is, if gay marriage becomes legal, will slim homosexual couples get to head the list?
More here.
p.s. I have a funny story about Meg Ryan questioning her adoption of a Chinese child that has not to do with her singleness but of her obtuseness regarding Asian culture. Remind me!

Too bad for single people then who just want to have a child. I can't believe even obesity's being considered as a factor to blocking adoption applications.
I want to adopt a Chinese baby some day :( Maybe it helps that I'm Chinese and speak the language (well, barely)? Or will my chances be foiled because my husband isn't Chinese?
Whichever way you look at it, China will become more important to all of us in the future.

For Korean adoption, at least, even one parent being Korean American I think is a +.

I"m right in the middle of this all! Hopefully our adoption from China will occur in the next few month, but these has been coming down the pike since 2001...and Korea already has some of these restrictions in gear! If you are Chinese, your "referral" of a child from China will be expedited! But I"d say get your paperwork together now and get that adoption goin'! You can back channel me if you'd like, worsted witch...we've adopted from China 2x...waiting for 3!
Good luck, Elise!!!!
i think that if people feel lead to adopt a child they should be aloud, they shiould be interveiwed and there should be some rules but china is being rediculious, i LOVE china with all my heart and hope to move there one day as a christian missionary and adopt a few children but if the rules get and more strict it will be imposible. God Bless China!:)
